Caps and the new spells
Forge caps run from about 10–12 in Springlands to 41–50 in Veilwater Basin. The Night Sanctum forge is the best in its region. Fuel is Archaic Essence. 1.0’s mage list includes Mana Drain, Entangle, Pillar of Flames, Blizzard, Ball Lightning, three summon totems, and Summon Hollow Skeleton, plus those 22 eternal versions. Runes also upgrade armor, shields, rings, and pickaxes as of Update 8. That is a different slot from the gem socket.

41–50, at a Veilwater Basin forge. Earlier forges stop sooner.
Can I add a gem anywhere?
No. The forge is the station. Turkish searchers asking how to socket a weapon are looking for this building.
